Indoor & Outdoor Climbing Coaching in the Lake District

Leading a multi pitch climb in the lake district - chris ensoll mountain guide

Is this the course for me?

This course is for any climber, indoor or outdoor, who wants to improve and progress.

What level of fitness do I need?

Fitness level 2: you exercise regularly through the week – running, walking, cycling or playing sports. You can sustain a raised heart rate for a 45 minute run or a 2 hour bike ride. You can walk in the mountains or climb all day, but feel tired at the end.

What does the course cover?

We can be based indoors at a climbing wall, out on a crag, or a combination of the two. We will identify your strengths and weaknesses, and work out what is holding you back. We will develop coping strategies in the four key areas:

  • physical

  • psychological

  • technical

  • tactical

What's the maximum ratio?

1:4

Where do the courses take place?

Indoor coaching will be at Kendal wall. For outdoor coaching we will choose a venue, usually in the south Lakes, appropriate to the aims of the day.

What dates are available?

You choose the date, and we tailor the programme for you. Available dates are shown in the Climbing & Mountaineering in the Lake District section on the calendar.

How much will it cost?

Please check out the Essential Info for the Lake District page for costs for full day and half day bookings. We can offer shorter sessions for indoor climbing, at a cost of £50/hour.

What about transport, and what do I need to bring?

Please check out the Essential Info for the Lake District page.

What do our clients say about us?

Not too much to say other than Chris did a great job. We packed lots and did a great mix of classic climbs, coaching and some nice harder climbs. We would be back next week if we could! Will see you again soon.

The day was superb and perfect for learning and practising ‘what I didn’t know I was needing/seeking’, if that makes sense. From increased confidence on climbing; placing gear; dynamic movement; smaller steps; knowing that rock and feet ARE sticky; awareness of foot placement and heels down to say a few. On writing down all the salient points from the day, it spread over a full side of A4 and probably there are a few pointers that I’ve missed!! Leading and placing gear, whilst on the top rope has brought me much confidence. I can see the route in my thoughts - it looks a sticky route and very do-able now in my mind and one that I feel keen and eager to return to and have another try, until I lead it without the rope. Who knew I would even get close to climbing an E2, without being hauled and dragged up it on a pulley system!! Also, getting round a small over-hang section and jumping off, trusting a rope. Amazing Chris - thank you so much. To top the day off, the weather certainly played ball, with warm sunshine for the day. Not forgetting Bobby, whose presence and ‘route finding’ creates a lovely calming atmosphere. Once again, a great day and a day overcoming many mind barriers!

From the moment we met Chris our instruction began, all friendly and informal but importantly enabled us to use the wall independently. I've been to the wall every week since and am still gaining from that initial coanching. Chris was very friendly and encouraging, he was an excellent coach. Our session was intense learning but Chris made it enjoyable and reflective - I'd highly recommend him.
